    A BRITISH YACHTSMAN, 29-YEAR-OLD ROBIN KNOX JOHNSON, HAS BEEN SIGHTED AT SEA OFF AUSTRALIA HEADING FOR NEW ZEALAND. IN HIS 32-FOOT (10 METRES) KETCH "SUHALI MAYU", HE IS TAKING PART IN A SINGLE-HANDED ROUND-THE-WORLD RACE SPONSORED BY A BRITISH NEWSPAPER, WITH A PRIZE OF GPB5,000 STERLING.

    ROBIN KNOX-JOHNSON IS A BRITISH MERCHANT NAVY MASTER WHO SAILED FROM CORNWALL ON 17 JUNE AND HAS BEEN AT SEA FOR MORE THAN 150 DAYS. SEVERAL OTHER COMPETITORS IN THE RACE HAVE ALREADY GIVEN UP.

    MR. KNOX-JOHNSON WAS SIGHTED NEAR PORT PHILIP IN AUSTRALIA BY THE PORT PHILIP PILOT BOAT "WYUNA". AFTER EXCHANGING GREETINGS WITH CAPTAIN LEWIS OF THE "WYUNA," HIS FIRST HUMAN CONTACT FOR OVER FIVE MONTHS, MR. KNOX-JOHNSON TOSSES TO THE "WYUNA" A CANNISTER CONTAINING HIS LOG BOOKS AND MAIL.

    THE "SUHALI MAYU" BORE THE SCARS OF HEAVY WEATHER ENCOUNTERED ON THE RUN FROM ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA. THE WHITE HULL WAS DIRTY NEAR THE WATERLINE AND OTHER PARTS BORE BROWN RUST RED SCARS FROM THE POUNDING THE TINY VESSEL RECEIVED AT SEA. MR. KNOX-JOHNSON WAS STEERING HIS KETCH BY HAND BECAUSE HIS SELF-STEERING MECHANISM HAD BEEN DAMAGED IN HEAVY WEATHER.
