Background: In Canton, the First National Exhibition of Artcrafts on New Motifs sponsored by the 2nd Ministry of Light Industry of the Chinese People's Republic was held in mid October.

In the 16 years since China was liberated, new motifs depicting new people and new events in the Socialist society have flourished along with the work of inheriting and promoting the best traditions of national art.

'The new Peking' minutely carved on ivory reflects the spirit of self-reliance and hardwork with which the Chinese people built up Peking. The tusk measures 1.8 metres long and weighs 63 kilograms. Another ivory carving of the same size entitled 'On the Long March' is a successful application of several methods of traditional carving. The theme recalls the epic scenes of the Long March of the Chinese Worker-peasant Red Army.

Embroideries from Shanghai done on woolen materials are a bold departure from tradition with many new stitches and new patterns. Beautiful stone carvings from Ching-Tien.

This Ching Tien stone carving takes its theme from a poem by Chairman Mao Tse-tung. 'The mushroom cloud of China's first atomic explosion' is an example of fine craftsmanship.

Embroideries from the city of Soochow are renowned for their choice of brilliant colours. Both the thematic content and craftsmanship are of a level unattained before.

'Desert Survey Team' is characteristic of the qualities of Soochow embroidery.

'Weaving a fishing net' highlights an assiduous image of Chinese fisherwomen.

Over a thousand exhibits are on display, selected from 24 province, municipalities and autonomous regions. The themes are all taken from real life. The exhibition presents some of the latest works by Chinese artists who are revolutionizing their creative endeavours on the basis of inheriting and carrying forward what is best in the national legacy.
