Background: VISNEWS filmed the second trial of Major Sosa Blanco in the War Ministry courtroom, Havana, Cuba, Feb 17. Blanco was accused of murdering 25 people during the Batista regime.
He was again found guilty and sentenced to be shot.
At his first trial in Havana Sports Coliseum, Jan 22, Blanco faced an audience of nearly 18,000. Rebel leader Fidel Castro decreed that all 'war criminals' be tried in public to show his foreign critics that his men were justified in summarily trying and executing ex-Batista police and troops.
The glare of publicity on this public trail caused nearly as much criticism as the out-of-hand executions, so Blanco was retried in private.
Fidel Castro was appointed Premier of Cuba, Feb 17. One of his first actions was to slash Cabinet Ministers' salaries by half. Also he announced that casinos will open again shortly under strict governmental control and that a lottery for developing housing schemes will be started soon.
Castro claimed that under "honest Government" his regime would attain higher living standards than those of USA or Russia in a few years, "Those countries must spend money for bombs and armaments, but we do not have that problem."
