  • Description

INTRODUCTION: The Mauritanian leader, President Moktar Ould Daddah, has been on an official visit to France. On Wednesday (1 June), President Ould Daddah had a meeting with President Valery Giscard d'Estaing at the Elysee Palace in Paris. He told newsmen later that the French leader and agreed in principle to the continued supply of French military equipment to Mauritania.

SYNOPSIS: President Ould Daddah has been keen to get a reassurance on French arms supplies because of Mauritania's conflict in the Western Sahara with Polisario Front guerrillas. The Western Sahara -- formerly Spanish Sahara -- is now jointly governed by Mauritania and Morocco. But the Polisario Front are an organisation based in Algeria who say the territory should have the right of self-determination, and have been following a campaign of violence to support their cause. There have been a number of clashes in recent months between Mauritanian forces and the Polisario Front.

The Mauritanian leader said in Paris that his talks with President Giscard d'Estaing had been very fruitful. He said the French leader had agreed to the principle of French arms and military instructors being sent to Mauritania. He flew from Paris to Morocco for a meeting with King Hassan.
