  • Description

The winter of 1957-58 has turned into one of the most severe in more than 30 years. Ice is jamming the great Mississippi. At the Alten, Illinois locks... just north of St. Louis... only a thin strip of river is still open to navigation. And in the Chicago area the locks at the city's Lakeside Decks are frozen shut for the first time since they were installed twenty years ago:
Lake Michigan traffic began to pile up late Monday night as the biting arctic cold sealed the locks shut. One big tanker, with 300-thousand gallons of fuel oil, was frozen in and unable to break clear. Men tried at first to free the ships with chipping poles...and even tried to dissolve it with hot steam and salt. A steam shovel finally solved the problem and eventually cut away the ice jam and freed the Chicago locks. From Chicago to Florida...where Tallahassee reports a 3-inch snowfall...winter is King even if the calendar says spring is only five weeks away.
