  • Description

Further demonstrations took place in Istanbul, May 2, as 3,000 people, mostly students, milled outside the "Municipal Palace", shouting "freedom", and calling for the resignation of Turkish Prime Minister, Mr. Menderes. Inside the building, the North Atlantic Council was holding its opening meeting where NATO Ministers discussed disarmament.

When the demonstrators refused to disperse, troops charged them with the butts of their rifles. Tanks then sealed off all streets leading to the conference building.

Demonstrators behaved in a calm and dignified manner in general, but there were violent clashes as troops used rifle butts and fists as the crowd retreated from the Nato building.

Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr. Zorlu, said in his speech to the Council that Prime Minister Menderes had been detained in Ankara by the crisis in the city which he described as having been caused by "a handful of youths exploited by certain groups for their selfish political aims."
The day curfew - which lasted 32 hours - was lifted at 4 a.m. May 2, but the night curfew was still in force.
