Background: Admiral Lord Mountbatten, Chief of Britain's Defence Staff - on a fifteen-day tour of British bases in Europe, the Middle and Near East - made his first stop in West Berlin, Germany, Mar 22.
He inspected a guard of the East Anglia Regiment, and visited French and American headquarters.
At noon he met West Berlin's Mayor Willi Brandt at the City Hall and signed the city's Golden Book. Speaking in German he thanked Berliners for their kindness to British garrison troops. It was his first visit since 1945, he said, and his expectations that the hard-working citizens had made good war's ravages was fully realised.
Lord Mountbatten leaves Berlin Mar 23 for Libya, where he will see "Operation Stardust", a joint Army-RAF exercise. Other stops include Cyprus, Teheran, Aden, and finally Paris, where he will attend a meeting of NATO's military committee.
