Background: Cerknica Lake, in Yugoslavia, dries up every year during the summer. This year, it has run dry twice because the country has endured an unusually hot season. The millions of fish that normally live in the lake, have had to be rescued. Fishermen have done their best, but thousands of the weaker species have died. The waters in the lake run underground during the hot weather, leaving the fish stranded on the dry lake bed. The fish that are saved are put into fresh-water streams and gullies that run alongside the lake. Fishermen try to save the pike from the lake, because they are the most valuable. They say they have managed to save ninety per cent of them this year. The pike live with the other rescued fish in the fresh-water until the autumn rains--when the lake fills up again.
