  • Description

A glamorous American grandmother, a Jewish lay-reader, a Maltese businessman and a Protestant clergyman from Uruguay were among the competitors, representing fifteen nations, who took part in the International Bible Quiz at Jerusalem University, Israel on August 19.

The competitors were chosen for this quiz by Bible knowledge contests held in their home countries. The competition is part of the tenth anniversary celebrations of the State of Israel.

All but one of these bible readers, Amos Hacham the Jewish lay-reader, are Christians of various shades of denomination. Hacham, who won the quiz with a total of 42 points -- his nearest rival, Mlle Simone Dumont of France, scored 29 points -- was helped by friends who sat up all night on the 19th singing psalms!
Among the celebrities watching the 5-hour quiz -- it started at 8 p.m. and ended at 1 a.m. -- were the President of Israel -- Mr. Ben Zwi -- and his wife, the Israeli Prime Minister -- Mr. Ben-Gurion -- and members of the Israeli and foreign diplomatic corps.

In the amphitheatre were 3,000 people and thousands more followed the quiz on what was the longest single radio programme yet broadcast by Israeli Radio. The tremendous interest was compared with the following that the USSR v. Israel football match drew.

The largest contingent, outside Europe, was from South America and included a Russian expatriate, Miss Sarah Rabinovitz -- a resident of Mexico City - who became and ardent believer in the New Testament 16 years ago, when her family was killed during the second world war by the Russians.

The winner of the contest received an ancient glass jar, excavated from an Israeli site, valued at GBP1,000 Israeli (about GBP200 sterling). The competitor in second place, was awarded an antique half-shekel coin and the third prize was a gold medallion issued as a souvenir by the Tenth Anniversary Committee. All the contestants received antique clay jars which were uncovered in Israeli excavations.

Amos Hacham might go to the USA to take part in the "64,000 dollar quiz" -- a television programme -- on Bible knowledge. After such a notable win in this International Quiz, his chances of winning in the American quiz are rated high.

Amos Hacham, a cripple, usually speaks with difficulty, but he answered the questions fired at him by the judges in a proud clear booming voice. Mr. Ben Gurion the Prime Minister, himself under treatment for muscular disorder, has arranged for Mr. Hacham to have treatment for his ??? from his own specialist
