  • Description

The collapse of an old underground rock quarry has resulted in a series of cave-ins in a residential section of Kansas City, Kansas (middlewestern USA).

On Thursday night (21 January) occupants moved out of two houses extensively damaged during the day. The only casualty so far is a dog that tumbled into a 15-foot deep crack during the night. It was rescued unharmed by members of the Humane Society.

The affected area is above an old abandoned rock quarry. The quarry's tunnels are collapsing, causing the earth above the cave in. This has occurred in a sparsely settled section. There have been no injuries and only two houses have been destroyed so far, However, officials have checked maps of the quarry and believe the tunnels may run under as many as 100 houses. They say they don't believe there will be any additional cave-ins for the present, although they admit they cannot be sure. Some residents are taking no chances and are moving out.

Police are sticking close to the area. State mine officials are making an investigation but at this time no one knows for sure that the ground won't open up again.
