  • Description

At least 99 people were killed and another 100 were injured on Thursday (29 November) in the southern Japanese city of Kumamoto when fire swept through a department store packed with shoppers. Helicopters managed to save many who fled in panic to the roof and upper floors of the eight-storey building. Others slid down ropes to waiting firemen. Some survivors told police they had seen bodies lying around lifts and escalators on the lower floors.

Two hours after the alarm was raised, firemen said the blaze was out of control. An employee spotted the fire in bedding stores on a staircase between the second and third floors and although the first fire engines arrived within minutes, the fire had already spread to the upper floors. The first and second floors were hardly touched by the flames and store employees were able to carry some of the stock to safety.
