  • Description

THE FRENCH SOCCER CLUB L'OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS QUALIFIED FOR THE QUARTER-FINALS OF THE EUROPEAN CUP-WINNERS' CUP TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) DESPITE LOSING 3-4 TO THE LONDON CLUB, TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR IN THEIR SECOND LEG FIRST ROUND TIE PLAYED IN LONDON. L'OLYMPIQUE WON THE FIRST LEG 1-0 MAKING THE AGGREGATE SCORE 4-4. THE FRENCH CLUB QUALIFIED BECAUSE GOALS SCORED IN AWAY WATCHES COUNT DOUBLE IN THE EVENT OF AN OVERALL TIE.

A CROWD OF 42,000 WATCHED THE GAME. SPURS WERE TWO-NIL UP AT HALF TIME, BUT THEIR WEAK DEFENCE WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH AGAINST THE FRENCH FORWARDS.

JIMMY GREAVES, A VETERAN EUROPEAN CAMPAIGNER, NETTED THE FIST GOAL AFTER GILZEAN HAD HEADED A WEAK CLEARANCE TO HIM. GREAVES SCORED FOR HIS CLUB AGAIN FROM A PENALTY. BOND, MAKING HIS FIRST APPEARANCE IN EUROPEAN SOCCER, WAS BROUGHT DOWN IN THE PENALTY AREA BY SCHUINN AND TO THE DEAFENING CHEERS ON THE HOME CROWD GREAVES CALMLY CONVERTED THE PENALTY.

NINE MINUTES AFTER THE INTERVAL SPURS DEFENCE WAS SHATTERED BY LYONNAIS, RAMBERT PICKED UP A PASS IN MID-FIELD AND HAMMERED A 20 YARD SHOT AGAINST THE POST. TO HIS DELIGHT HE SAW DINIALLO PUT THE REBOUND IN THE NET.

THIS LEVELLED THE AGGREGATE SCORE BUT THE LONDON CLUB WENT AHEAD AGAIN WHEN JONES HEADED HOME A ROBERTSON CENTRE. THE LONDONERS TRIUMPH WAS SHORT-LIVED. THREE MINUTES LATER THE FRENCHMEN STRUCK AGAIN. RAMBERT, CUTTING IN ON THE LEFT, DROVE THE BALL PAST GOAL-KEEPER JENNINGS AND CYRIL KNOWLES, IN A DESPERATE EFFORT TO RECOVER IT, COULD ONLY HELP THE BALL INTO THE NET.

IN THE 69TH MINUTE SPURS REGAINED THE LEAD WHEN GILZEAN PLANTED A CENTRE FROM ROBERTSON INTO THE RACK OF THE NET.

BUT L'OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS WERE STILL IN THE RUNNING AND SPURS HAD TO PAY THE PENALTY FOR A WEAK DEFENCE. A BEAUTIFUL CROSS FROM PIN DECEIVED JENNINGS AND BOUASSA WAS THERE TO SQUEEZE THE BALL HOME.

SO ALTHOUGH SPURS WON THIS LEG OF THEIR CUP THE, THEY WENT DOWN 7-4 ON AGGREGATE BECAUSE AWAY GOALS COUNT DOUBLE IN THE EVENT OF A DRAW.
