  • Description

In Malawi, there have been celebrations for the 10th anniversary of Mothers' Day there.

SYNOPSIS: For the first time, the ceremonies were held in Malawi's capital city Lilongwe -- at the Kamuzu Sports Stadium named after the country's life president, Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda.

Dr. Banda arrived in an open car to a welcome by brightly-costumed dancing women. Since the first Mothers' Day in 1967, it has become traditional for Malawian women to salute their leader in this way in recognition of his work to develop and unite the country.

The idea for these annual celebrations was Dr. Banda's. He declared that Malawian women played a crucial role in achieving the country's independence. On becoming President in 1966, he did not forget that many women had put pressure on the colonial government to achieve his release after his arrest in a state of emergency in ???. Since then, he has stressed that he would like to see women and men equally sharing opportunities in all fields, including politics.

Among the spectators were four British politicians, Baroness Stedman and Baroness Stedman and Labour Members of Parliament, Mrs. Lena Jeger and Miss Josephine Richardson.

After the dancing, Dr. Banda addressed the jubilant crowd.

Malawi's family system is largely a matriarchal one, with the mother having far more influence and importance in her child's life than its father. In his first Mothers' Day speech ten years ago, Dr. Banda declared that in his view, to any child a bad father was a misfortune, but a bad and useless mother was a tragedy.
