THE TUNKU, AMONG THE MOST HATED MEN IN INDONESIA WHEN SUKARNO WAS IN POWER, WAS WELCOMED AT THE AIRPORT BY THE FORMER PRESIDENT'S SUCCESSOR, ACTING PRESIDENT SUHARTO.

THERE WERE THE USUAL WELCOMING CEREMONIES AT THE AIRPORT. THE TWO LEADERS INSPECTED A GUARD OF HONOUR, AND THE TUNKU AND HIS PARTY MET INDONESIAN AND OFFICIALS. IN A SPEECH, THE TUNKU SAID THAT AFTER WHAT HE CALLED THE BITTER PAST HE NOW FOUND THAT THE PEOPLES OF INDONESIAN AND MALAYSIA ARE FACING COMMON PROBLEMS AND SAID THEY SHOULD WORK TOGETHER.

AFTER THE AIRPORT CEREMONY, THE LEADERS DROVE IN A MOTORCADE TO THE FREEDOM PALACE IN THE CAPITAL, WHERE THEY EXCHANGED GIFTS.

THE VISIT IS THE FIRST SINCE GENERAL SUHARTO ENDED CONFRONTATION IN AUGUST 1966. IT FOLLOWS 18 MONTHS IN WHICH RELATIONS HAVE SLOWLY IMPROVED BETWEEN THE TWO NATIONS, WHOSE PEOPLE SHARE A COMMON LANGUAGE, RELIGION AND RACIAL ORIGIN.

THE TWO LEADERS WILL DISCUSS THE REVIVAL OF A FRIENDSHIP TREATY THAT WAS SIGNED NINE YEARS AGO, AND MAY ALSO ATTEMPT TO FIND COMMON GROUND FOR DEFENCE TALKS.
