  • Description

THE ROYAL ACADEMY TODAY (11 DECEMBER) PREVIEWED IN LONDON A COMPREHENSIVE EXHIBITION COMMEMORATING THE 200 YEARS SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1768. THE ACADEMY HAS ASSEMBLED FOR THE EXHIBITION THE MOST NOTEWORTHY PAINTINGS, SCULPTURES AND OTHER WORKS OF ART SHOWN AT ANNUAL SUMMER EXHIBITIONS SINCE THE FIRST ONE WAS HELD IN 1769.

IN ONE GALLERY THE PAINTINGS OF GAINSBOROUGH, TURNER AND CONSTABLE ARE ON SHOW. THE WORKS OF SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS, THE ACADEMY'S FIRST PRESIDENT, HAVE BEEN MOUNTED ON THE SCALE OF A ONE-MAN EXHIBITION.

ANOTHER GALLERY CONTAINS WORKS BY LIVING OR RECENTLY DECEASED MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMY. A HIGHLIGHT OF THE EXHIBITION IS MICHELANGELO'S "MADONNA AND CHILD WITH THE INFANT ST. JOHN", REPUTED TO BE THE MOST VALUABLE PIECE OF SCULPTURE IN GREAT BRITAIN.

THE ROYAL ACADEMY WAS ORIGINATED BY KING GEORGE III IN 1768 AS "A SOCIETY FOR PROMOTING THE ARTS OF DESIGN". SINCE THEN THE REIGNING BRITISH MONARCH HAS BEEN PATRON OF THE ACADEMY.

THE ROYAL ACADEMY ART SCHOOLS ARE NOW THE OLDEST ESTABLISHED ART SCHOOLS IN GREAT BRITAIN.

THE BICENTENARY EXHIBITION WILL BE OPENED TO THE PUBLIC BY THE PRESIDENT, SIR THOMAS MONNINGTON, ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14.
