SYNOPSIS: Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines bore the brunt of the earthquake which centred in the Celebes Sea and touched off a 30-foot (10-metres) tidal wave. Most of the dead were caught by the tidal wave was it washed over low-lying areas. The earthquake registered 7.8 on the Richter scale. The National Disaster Centre said at least 29.000 were made homeless. Mindanao houses are traditionally flimsy shanty-type dwellings, lightly constructed of wood and hardboard.

Many of the dead and injured were children asleep when the earthquake and tidal wave struck. A Filipino geophysicists said he believed the earthquake closely connected with those which struck China and Indonesia in the past two months. Several small quakes shook the Philippines after the big one, and there were fears of another major quake. It was the nation's greatest ever natural disaster.
