  • Description

HUNDREDS OF WEST BERLINERS STREAMED THROUGH THE WALL TODAY (MONDAY) TO MAKE DAY-LONG VISITS TO RELATIVES IN THE EASTERN SECTOR. IT WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE FIFTH DAY-PASSES SCHEME AGREED BETWEEN THE WEST BERLIN AND EAST GERMAN GOVERNMENTS.

THIS SCHEME WILL GO ON FOR THE 14-DAY WHITSUN PERIOD, AND MORE THAN 400,000 WEST BERLINERS ARE EXPECTED TO SEEK DAY PASSES FROM THE EAST GERMAN GOVERNMENT.

IT IS THE LAST SCHEME UNDER THE DAY-PASS AGREEMENT, WHICH ALLOWED MORE THAN TWO-MILLION VISITS TO EAST BERLIN LAST AUTUMN, AT CHRISTMAS AND AT EASTER. OFFICIALS FROM BOTH SIDES ARE EXPECTED TO GET TOGETHER SOON TO NEGOTIATE A FRESH SCHEME.

BUT OBSTACLES ARE EXPECTED. EAST GERMANY IS EXPECTED TO DEMAND THE CLOSURE OF REFUGEE CAMPS IN WEST BERLIN AND THE WITHDRAWAL OF WEST GERMAN GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS FROM THE CITY. "BERLINERS CANNOT HAVE BOTH -- DAY PASSES AND PROVOCATIONS," THE EAST GERMAN PRIME MINISTER, HERR WILLY STOPH, HAS STATED.

(EAST GERMANY BEGAN BUILDING THE WALL, AS THE CITY BORDER HAS BECOME KNOWN, IN AUGUST, 1961.)
