  • Description

Khmer Prime Minister Lon Nol announced on Thursday (7 october) that his forces had defeated the North Vietnamese in a major military victory neat the isolated provincial capital of kompong Thom, but his claims were at variance with those of the operation.

Marshal Lon Nol said Government troops had shaken the communists and destroyed their best regiments in the battle to relieve Kompong Thom, which has been out off by land by communist forces for over 19 months. while Marshal Lon Nol said over five thousand communist had been put out of action, including over 900 killed, the commander of the operation, Lieutenant Colonel Ith Suong, set the enemy losses at less than a thousand, with about 300 killed.

Both reports, however, did say the fighting was heavy. Communist forces, they said, had been firmly entrenched in the surrounding hills and jungle and Khmer troops used artillery and helicopter assault teams to flush them into the open. Captured weapons were later displayed to newsmen, and Visnews cameraman Yosep Lee filmed some of these after covering the Khmer advance.

SYNOPSIS: The Khmer military command announced a major victory over North vietnamese forces near the isolated provincial capital of Kompong Thom on Thursday. The area has been cut off on land for over 18 moths.

The Khmer Prime Minister, Marshal Lon Nol, announced the victory, part of an operation code-named "Tchenla 2", on Thursday night but his claims varied widely from those of the operation commander. Marshal Lon Nol said over 900 communists had been killed during the operation, while Lieutenant Colonel Ith Suong issued a military statement from his head-quarters in the battlefield saying that about 300 had been confirmed dead
During the operation, the Khmer forces had to flush the communists from the jungle hillsides....they used helicopter assault teams and artillery for much of the early stages of the battles, and then moved infantry in to clean up the area. Estimates of weapons captured varied from a hundred to 300.
