    PRESIDENT DE GAULLE OF FRANCE WHO IS ON A WORLD TOUR, ARRIVED IN ADDIS ABABA, THE CAPITAL OF ETHIOPIA YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AFTER VISITING DJIBOUTI, IN FRENCH SOMALILAND, WHERE FOUR PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND SEVENTY INJURED IN RIOTS LAST WEEK.

    THE RIOTING WAS SPARKED OFF BY DEMONSTRATORS CALLING FOR FULL INDEPENDENCE FROM FRANCE.

    ON HIS ARRIVAL BY AIR IN ADDIS ABABA, THE FRENCH PRESIDENT WHO IS ACCOMPANIED BY MADAME DE GAULLE WAS GREETED BY EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE AND ETHIOPIAN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS. AFTER THE AIRPORT FORMALITIES, THE TWO LEADERS DROVE IN THE ROYAL COACH TO THE EMPEROR'S PALACE.

    LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY) PRESIDENT DE GAULLE WAS GUEST OF HONOUR AT A BANQUET. IN REPLY TO A TOAST PROPOSED BY EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE SAID FRANCE WANTED TO STRENGTHEN ITS RELATIONS WITH ETHIOPIA.

    HE ALSO MENTIONED THE CONFLICT IN VIETNAM, AND SAID IT WAS SPREADING TO THE RISK OF AN ESCALATION INTO A CONFLICT BETWEEN TWO CONTINENTS.
