  • Description

Ramshackle squatters' huts and new blocks of flats were filmed by Visnews in Malaya's capital Kuala Lumpur during November.

The steep rise in population figures combined with a persistent trend of migration from country districts into towns has created a serious problem especially for the capital where an army of illegal squatters have put up temporary shacks in the heart of the city. Living conditions here are unhygienic, traffic severely impeded and in the event of a fire the rickety abodes would kindle the flames to a blazing inferno.

Faced with the urgent necessity of disposing of these potential danger spots and preventing the slum areas from becoming permanent eyesores, the government, through the Federal Housing Trust, is building huge blocks of flats for people in the lower income groups. Two of these - the Loke Yew Flats for 220 families and the 2 1/2-million-dollar Suleiman Court off Batu Road - have recently been completed on a former squatter site where a fire disaster 18 months ago made 5,000 people homeless.

Moving-in day has come for the lucky men, women and children who at last claim what they have so long been awaiting - a home of their own. With transport provided by the municipal authorities, moving is no headache. Everyone lends a helping hand and municipal councillors make sure that everything runs smoothly. These flats with their kerosene stoves supplied by the Trust and their pleasant lay-out make a decisive change from the unhealthy slum existence of yesterday.
