Soccer....one of the Dutch stars of the last two World Cup Championships is now playing in America and has just had his deut with New York Cosmos. The 27-year-old midfield player Johan Neeskens recently signed for the American side from Barcelona in preference to moving to Arsenal in the English League.
SYNOPSIS: The crowd at East Rutherford in New Jersey gave Neeskens Number 13, an enthusiastic welcome to American soccer for his first match in the U.S.A. against the New England Tea Men.
Cosmos, in the white strip playing from right to left, were pre-match favourites. However, the glamour New York side quickly learned that the game wasn't going to go all their own way. In fact last season the New England side were the only team to twice defeat eventual league winners, Cosmos.
Neeskens is expected to add a sound midfield presence to the New York team. Prior to this match Cosmos had lost their two previous games, which hadn't happened for just on two years.
Neeskens, who critics describe as one of the main reasons for Holland rising to world prominence in soccer, has signed a five year contract with the New York Cosmos. He helped lead Barcelona to the Cup Winners Cup over Fortuna dusseldorf this year.
On this occasion New England made a brave attack on the Cosmos goalmouth but keeper David Broic tidly saved the shot.
In the second half Neeskens had a chance to score but failed to fid his target.
The match was narrowly won by Cosmos with a goal from Neeskens midfield partner Rick Davis. Final score New York Cosmos New England Team Men o.
