  • Description

In the final Professional Track Meeting of the year, Kenyan runner, Ben Jipcho, won the mile race with the fastest time ever run at the Madison Square Gardens track -- 3 minutes, 50.6 seconds.

There was an interesting mixture of other events as well. Mrs. Wyomia Tyus Simburg won the women's 60 yard dash in 6.5 seconds. The 60 yards high hurdles went to Rod Milburn. Steve Smith took the pole vault with 17 feet 8 inches while his rival Bob Seagren did not even reach 17 feet. When giant shotputter Carl Salb lost the mixed 30 yard dash to Barbara Farrall he hoisted her on his shoulders to show his gallantry.

But the high point of the evening was the mile. Jipcho's time was all the more remarkable because, after he had burst past Chuck Labenz, he had virtually no competition.

SYNOPSIS: The last professional track meet of the season at Madison Square Gardens in New York on Wednesday -- and the first race is the women's sixty yard dash. Mrs. Wyomia Tyus Simburg raced home to win.

He tried to top eighteen feet but failed.

But the high point of the evening was the mile. There was a high quality field, including Ben Jipcho of Kenya and the American Jim Ryun.

But after Jipcho burst past Labenz, there was only one runner in it. Although he had no competition over the final stretch Jipcho managed to finish with a time of just over three minutes and fifty seconds -- the fastest mile ever run at Madison Square Gardens.
