SYNOPSIS: Crowds of people lined the roads at the town of Aleg in south-west Mauritania on Thursday to give a warm welcome to President Marien Ngouabi of Congo-Brazzaville who was in the country for four days of talks with President Ould Daddah.

The two presidents arrived at the lake town of Aleg, capital of the Fifth region, in an open land-rover. This was the third day of President Ngouabi's visit. Hundreds of ordinary people waved as the Presidential cavalcade passed. Many had travelled long distances by camel to welcome their visitor from Congo-Brazzaville.

In the town of Aleg itself, the provincial capital further honoured President Ngouabi with speeches of welcome from administrative leaders. During his visit to Mauretania, President Ngouabi has had a series of talks with President Ould Daddah in the Mauretanian capital Nouakchott, visited a number of industrial plants there, and also paid a visit to the economic capital of Nouadhibu.

As his speech in Aleg, and a later joint communique indicated, the discussions between the two presidents during the visit have proved 'harmonious and successful'.
