  • Description

Representatives of the United States, Britain , France, and the Soviet Union resumed their talks Tuesday (8 April) to find a solution to the Middle East crisis.

The diplomats were unusually reluctant to discuss what was said at Tuesday's meeting or at the first session on the preceding Thursday.

On Thursday the Big Four representatives had no disagreements on procedure and immediately got down to matters of substance.

The second session took place at the New York residence of Jacob Malik, the Soviet Union's United Nations Ambassador. The United States was represented by its U.N. Ambassador, Charles Yost. Britain and France were represented by their U.N. Ambassadors. Lord Caradon and Armand Berard. None of the four was willing to discuss the meeting with newsmen.

The Middle East talks went on against a background of increasing tension between Israel and the Arab states. The Israeli port of Elath was shelled Thursday morning and Israel retaliated with a bombing attack of Jordan territory. Israeli and Egyptian artillerymen dueled across the Suez Canal later in the day.
