    WEST GERMANY'S FOUR-MAN BOBSLED TEAM WON THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AT LAKE PLACID, NEW YORK STATE, U.S.A. ON SUNDAY (23 FEBRUARY), AFTER THE SWISS FOURSOME CRASHED ON THE FINAL HEAT WHILE IN THE LEAD.

    WOLFGANG ZIMMERER WAS THE WINNING DRIVER, WITH A RECORD TOTAL TIME OF 4 MINUTES 20.75 FOR THE FOUR RUNS ON THE MILE-LONG (1,600-METRE) COURSE.

    ITALY'S NUMBER 2 SLED, PILOTED BY GIAN-FRANCO GASPARI, WAS HALF A SECOND SLOWER IN SECOND PLACE. GASPARI SET UP A NEW COURSE RECORD ON THIS THIRD RUN, BUT HAD A SLOW FINAL RUN ON A COURSE HEATED BY THE SUN DURING THE DELAY WHICH FOLLOWED THE SWISS ACCIDENT.

    UNITED STATES TEAMS WERE IN THIRD AND FOURTH PLACES AND THE RUMANIANS FIFTH.

    THE SWISS, WITH JEAN WICKI DRIVING, WERE GOING VERY FAST ON THEIR RUN WHEN THE SLED OVERTURNED AS IT CAME OUT OF A CURVE. WICKI WAS TREATED FOR SEVERAL BROKEN RIBS; HIS TEAM-MATES SUFFERED BRUISING.
