    The President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, arrived in Nairobi on Wednesday (5 May) to speak at the opening of the fourth United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

    President Marcos told reporters in Nairobi that the UNCTAD meeting was a unique opportunity for the developing countries of the world to state their case and he hoped that it would be possible to achieve tangible results in negotiations with the industrialised nations. President Marcos was host at last year's conference of developing countries in Manila at which their policies were decided for the UNCTAD conference.

    United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim also arrived for the UNCTAD meeting on Wednesday. Dr. Waldheim will stay in Kenya until 7 May when he will begin a seven nation tour of Africa that will take in Rwanda, Burundi, zaire, Congo, Cameroon, Chad ad Nigeria.

    The UN Secretary-General was also due to address the opening session of the UNCTAD meeting. He was accompanied by the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Gaston Thorn, who as President of the European Economic Community's Council of Ministers, will be representing the EEC at the meeting.

    Shortly after Dr. Waldheim arrived, President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines and his wife flew in to Nairobi Airport, in different aircraft. Dr. Waldheim had stayed at the airport to greet them.

    A crowd of Filipinos living in Kenya, tribal dancers and singers greeted the President and his wife at the airport.

    SYNOPSIS: Nairobi airport -- and the arrival of the United Nations Secretary-General, Kurt Waldheim. He was in Kenya to address the opening of the fourth United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

    When he leaves Kenya on seventh of May, Dr. Waldheim will make a seven nation tour of Africa.

    Dr. Waldheim was accompanied on his trip by M. Gaston Thorn, the Luxembourg Prime Minister. M. Thorn, as President of the European Economic Community's Council of Ministers, will be representing the E.E.C. at the meeting.

    Shortly after Dr. Waldheim arrived in Nairobi, the President of the Philippines -- Ferdinand Marcos -- flew in. The President old reporters at the airport that the UNCTAD meeting provided a unique opportunity for the developing countries to state their case to the rest of the world. President Marcos was host at last year's conference of developing countries which decided the policies for the UNCTAD conference. The President is being accompanied by his wife on his trip to Kenya. Mrs. Marcos arrived on a separate aircraft and was greeted by a group of Filipinos living in Nairobi.
