  • Description

THE IVORY COAST'S SECOND LARGEST PORT IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT SAN PEDRO, IN AN AREA OF THE FRENCH-SPEAKING COUNTRY KNOWN AS "LE FAR WEST." THE AREA SURROUNDING SAN PEDRO IS AGRICULTURALLY WEALTHY, AND THE NEW PORT IS EXPECTED TO EXPLOIT LOCAL PRIMARY PRODUCTION.

MUCH OF THE AREA SURROUNDING SAN PEDRO IS VIRGIN JUNGLE, BUT THERE ARE LARGE PLANTATIONS OF COFFEE AND BANANAS. SAN PEDRO ITSELF IS LITTLE MORE THAN A TRADING POST AT THE EDGE OF THE JUNGLE, BEST KNOW FOR ITS EARLIER ASSOCIATIONS WITH THE PORTUGUESE AND THE SLAVE TRADE. BUT IT WAS CHOSEN AS THE SITE FOR THE NEW PORT BECAUSE THE MOUTH OF THE SAN PEDRO RIVER FORMS A NATURAL BAY THERE.

A CONSORTIUM OF EIGHT COMPANIES FIVE FRENCH, TWO WEST GERMAN AND ON ITALIAN - HAS THE PROJECT IN HAND. ADDITIONAL FINANCE HAS COME FROM COMMON MARKET FUNDS.

THE FIRST STAGE OF THE OPERATION IS EXPECTED TO COST SOME 28 MILLION AMERICAN DOLLARS, AND SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY 1971. INITIAL PLANS INCLUDE A PORT, A TOWN FOR ABOUT 10,000 PEOPLE AND DEVELOPMENT OF ACCESS HIGHWAYS TO NEIGHBOURING REGIONS. SOME 390. MILES (625 KMS) OF NEW GOOD QUALITY ROAD WILL BE BUILT FROM SAN PEDRO.

THE PORT WHEN COMPLETED WILL ACCOMMODATE SHIPS WITH A DRAFT OF UP TO 32 FEET (9.8 METRES) ROUGHLY EQUIVALENT TO 14,000 TONS DEAD WEIGHT. IN ITS FIRST YEAR OF OPERATION THE PORT IS EXPECTED TO HANDLE ABOUT 60,000 TONS OF IMPORTS AND 700,000 TONS OF EXPORTS.

TO MEET THE INCREASED CAPACITY OF THE PORT, RUBBER, COCOA AND OIL PALM PLANTATIONS WILL ALSO BE ESTABLISHED.

THE SAN PEDRO RIVER WILL BE DIVERTED, SO THAT ITS WATERS CAN CONTINUE TO FLOW UNDISTURBED AWAY FROM THE PORT.
