  • Description

Seventy-two civilian Vietcong prisoners returned home on Friday (8 February).

The release at the Communist held town of Loc Ninh some 75 miles (120kms) north of Saigon was the first between South Vietnam and the Viet Cong for more than seven months. Both sides originally agreed to return all prisoners within 90 days of the January 1973 Paria peace agreement. But the South Vietnamese stopped the releases after an incident at the Loc Ninh airfield involving Vietcong civilians and photographers.

On Friday only a group of Vietcong officials and the four military heads of the International Commission of Control and Supervision welcomed the prisoners.

Unarmed helicopters flew the seventy-two prisoners form the Bien Hoa Air base near Saigon to Loc Ninh,. A total of 200 Viet cong were returned during the day -- the first of 4,000 prisoners to be exchanged over the next month.

204 South Vietnamese civilian and military personnel are to be returned during the week. But the first group are not due to be received until Tuesday (12 February). They will be handed over at Duc Nghiep, a Communist-controlled township in Pleiku Province.

Viet Cong and south Vietnamese troops fought a large battle near Duc Nghiep on Saturday (9 February), but military sources said the did not think it would affect the exchanges.
