    Secretary General of the Arab League, Mahmoud Riad, presided over a meeting of Arab Ambassadors at the League's headquarters in Cairo on Sunday (18 November) to discuss plans for the Arab Summit Conference which opens in Algiers on November 26th.

    The Conference will plot the future political and economic strategy of the Arab World in the aftermath of the October War. Among the countries represented at the Arab League meeting were Libya, Iraq, Morocco and North Yemen.

    But on Monday (November 19) it was announced that Iraq would not be attending the Summit Conference.

    The official Iraq News Agency, quoted Foreign Office spokesmen as saying: "Iraq does not consider that the convening of the Arab Summit will achieve the ambitions of the arab masses and their aims of liberation and continuation of the struggle with all their energies and potential against the enemies of the Arab nation".

    The spokesmen added that Iraq would remain loyal to it's national responsibilities and would continue to back "any serious Arab effort in the interest of our main Arab cause - Palestine".
