    On Friday (20 September), the Mali Chief of State, Colonel Moussa Traore received the good wishes of the Bamako diplomatic corps in a ceremony leading to Independence Day celebrations on 22 September. On that data the independent State of Mali is 14 years old. the ceremony, held in the reception centre of the capital's former air base, was attended by ambassadors accredited to Mali, and by representatives of international organisations in the country. Also present were members of the Malian Military Committee of National Liberation (CMLN), the country's governing body.

    During the ceremony, the French Ambassador, M.Louis Dallier, spoke on behalf of his fellow diplomats. He congratulated both Colonel Traore and the nation as a whole on the progress in Mali since independence in 1960.

    Colonel Traore thanked the ambassadorial delegation and assured them that Mali would continue to work for the unity of Africa and for the creation of a better world.

    Colonel Traore came to power in Mali in November 1968 after a bloodless army coup overthrew President Modibo Keita, who had governed the country since its independence.
