  • Description

A POWERFUL BOMB EXPLODED AT THE LARGEST AMERICAN OFFICERS' BILLET IN THE CENTRE OF SAIGON ON CHRISTMAS EVE. IT SHATTERED WINDOWS IN BUILDINGS NEARBY AND SMASHED CARS ON THE STREET. TWO AMERICANS DIED, AND NINETY-EIGHT PEOPLE WERE INJURED, INCLUDING 63 AMERICANS.

THE CHRISTMAS EVE EXPLOSION OCCURRED WHILE THE SUPPORTERS CROWDED THE STREETS. A THICK COLUMN OF SMOKE BELCHED UP FROM THE MULTI-STOREY BUILDING, AND FLAMES RAGED IN THE LOWER FLOORS. AMBULANCE RACED TO THE SCENE AND WERE USED TO FERRY WOUNDED AMERICANS AND VIETNAMESE WOMEN AND CHILDREN TO HOSPITAL.

STREETS AROUND "THE BRINK" AS THE BILLET IS CALLED, WERE LITTERED WITH DEBRIS, INCLUDING TINSEL AND CHRISTMAS TREE BRANCHES FROM THE AMERICAN QUARTERS.

SECURITY OFFICIALS ESTIMATED THAT THE BLAST WAS CAUSED BY AT LEAST 100 POUNDS OF PLASTIC EXPLOSIVES. THE BOMB WAS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN PLANTED IN A CAR PARKED INSIDE THE PREMISES. THE EXPLOSIONS DAMAGED ONE HALF OF THE SIX-STOREY BUILDING SO BADLY THAT OFFICIALS HAVE SAID THE DAMAGED HALF WILL HAVE TO BE TORN DOWN COMPLETELY.

AMONG THE WOUNDED WAS A MEMBER OF AUSTRALIA'S MILITARY ADVISORY TEAM. HE WAS ONE OF FOUR AUSTRALIANS LIVING AT "THE BRINK". HE WAS LATER ALLOWED TO LEAVE HOSPITAL AFTER TREATMENT.
