Background: Thousands of rock music fans rampaged through Chicago streets on Monday night and fought with police for five hours. At least 30 people, including 19 policemen, were injured -- two of them with gunshot wounds.
The fans threw stones, bottles and flares at police who returned the fire with tear gas grenades and baton charges.
The trouble started at a rock music festival in Grant Part attended by about 40,000 fans. The concert broke into chaos after a rock group refused to perform because of disorderliness among the crowd.
Fist fights broke out in the crowd and riot police were rushed in......to be greeted by bands of youths screaming "kill the pigs."
At one point in the riot police drew their revolvers and fired warning shots into the air when faced with chanting, jeering crowds. Two police cars were set alight by the angry mob and several stores were looted.
