  • Description

A giant Christmas tree was the focal point of a Christmas ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday (22 December).

SYNOPSIS: The Mayor of Nairobi, Miss Margaret Kenyatta, led a procession of city officials in their ceremonial robes. Prior to the occasion it was announced that she had been appointed Kenya's permanent representative to the United Nations Environment Programme.

Crowd of several hundred children watched Miss Kenyatta perform the pleasant task of switching on the city's Christmas tree lights. Everybody enjoyed the moment -- and there were also cheers for the Lady-Mayor, who is the eldest daughter of Kenya's President, Jomo Kenyatta.

Miss Kenyatta has served her country in many fields. Recently she launched a collection for the Nairobi Mayor's Christmas Tree Fund. The money is distributed among various charity groups in the city.

This year's collection raised a total of 221,000 Kenyan shillings (GBP 17,500 sterling).

With the Christmas tree glittering -- Father Christmas arrived to distribute sweets among the crowd. The celebrations continued with a local band and choir leading the public in carol singing.
