Background: At the 21st annual Kenema Show in Freetown recently, Prime Minister Dr. Siaka Stevens stressed the Government's desire for speedy agricultural development throughout Sierra Leone.
Thousands of people crowded the stands at this popular ???, including those of prominent agricultural equipment manufacturers from the United Kingdom and Europe. Colourful local dancers provided a lighter touch in the proceedings.
The Prime Minister told visitors to the show that it was the government's intention to promote development through the farmers and the rural people, who account for about 80 per cent of the population.
He said, agriculture, which offers earning opportunities to the majority, and is the bed-rick of Sierra Leone's social and economical development, should as a result have the highest priority.
Among the measures being pushed ahead are increased mechanisation of cultivation, the setting up of an agricultural credit bank for small farmers, and the adoption of integrated development projects involving numerous services and organisations concerned with rural development.
