  • Description

There has been renewed violence in Belfast, with serious clashed between British troops and militant Roman Catholics in the Castle Street area. Today's (Saturday's) trouble began after petrol bombs and stones were thrown at troops.

Troops used teargas in their attempts to disperse the demonstrators. In stone throwing incidents a number of soldiers were injured, including a marine commander.

Later, a bus was commandeered by the demonstrators and used as a barricade defence against the soldiers. The troops advanced on the demonstrators and so-called `snatch squads' arrested a number of people.

Tough security measures have now been introduced, with road blocks and spot checks and searches of motor vehicles. The army has warned it plans to take tougher measures against rioters, and has warned people to keep off the streets at night.
