    The World Chess Olympiad has ended in the Argentine capital of Buenos aires with Hungary ending the domination of world chess by the Soviet Union for the first time since. 1952.

    SYNOPSIS: The final rounds were played on Saturday (11 November) at the River Plate stadium. The Soviet Union versus Holland. This match was between former World Champion Boris Spassky and the 26 year old Dutch Grandmaster, Jan Timman. Holland was to finish equal eleventh with england and Bulgaria.

    Romanischin of the Soviet Union and Donner of Holland played one of the other games.

    Timman found the need to take a walk as he pondered his moves. The Soviet Union beat Holland two and a half to one and a half.

    Another of the Soviet Union-Holland clashes was between Polugaievsky and Sosonko. The Yugoslavian team was among those to go down to the victorious Hungarians. This match was between Matanovic and Sax -- one of Hungary's young talents.

    There was great interest in the Swiss-United States games. Soviet exile Viktor Korchnoi playing now for Switzerland, versus Lubomir Kavalek. Korchnoi was the top performer at the Olympiad getting nine out of a possible 11 points. The United States finished third in the final placing having at one stage threatened the supremacy of the Russians. only adjourned games were being played in the final round to decide the placing. Browne of the United States versus Hug of Switzerland. The game was to end in a draw. Vassily Smyslov -- the Captain of the Soviet team which was placed second -- said world chess was improving. He said there was no longer a monopoly on the game.
