  • Description

Portuguese Prime Minister Admiral Jose Pinheiro De Azevedo received a quiet reception during his five-hour visit to the tiny island of Porto Santo, in the Madeira group, on Saturday (21 February).

His tour of the North Atlantic islands was cut short after a bomb attempt on his life on the main island, Madeira, two days before.

The bomb was planted in a drain beneath the main road from Madeira airport and exploded only two minutes before the Premier was due to pass.

He had visited the group to swear in a new seven man governing junta on Madeira.

Admiral Azevedo's visit to Porto Santo passed quietly, and only small crowds, mostly socialists, turned out to greet him.

The Madeiras are about 300 miles (600 kms) west of Africa. Porto Santo has an area only seven miles (11 1/2kms) by four miles (6 1/2kms).

Madeira and Porto Santo are the only two inhabited islands in the group, which was colonised by the Portuguese in the early fifteenth century.
