LEADER ARRIVED IN ACCRA, CAPITAL OF GHANA, ON THURSDAY (8 JANUARY) DURING A THREE-WEEK TOUR OF TEN WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

    U THANT WAS GUEST OF HONOUR AT A RECEPTION GIVEN BY THE RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME IN GHANA, MR. GORDON MENZIES, AT THE STATE HOUSE IN ACCRA.

    THERE TO GREET U THANT WAS THE PRIME MINISTER OF GHANA, DR. BUSIA, AND HIS WIFE.

    AS PART OF HIS ENGAGEMENTS ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE VISIT, U THANT CALLED ON DR. BUSIA AT THE CASTLE, OSU. THE PRIME MINISTER AND THE UNITED NATIONS LEADER HAD TALKS LASTING 45 MINUTES.

    THEY ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE DISCUSSED THE NIGERIAN CONFLICT AND MATTERS AFFECTING WEST AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT.

    LATER, U THANT, WHO HAS CONDEMNED THE CONCEPT OF SECESSION, RESTATED HIS VIEWS. HE URGED THE BREAKWAY BIAFRAN LEADERS TO ACCEPT ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY PRINCIPLES OF SOLVING THE CONFLICT WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF NIGERIA'S TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY.
