  • Description

Thousands of admiring Australians packed Sydney harbour June 3 to bid farewell to the Chilean navy barquetine "Esmeralda", sailing for New Zealand after a tour of Australian waters.

Last minute goodbyes from the quay side mingled with shouted orders as the crew and 120 midshipmen aboard prepared to cast off. "Esmeralda" eased from her berth under power from her ancillary engines, then midshipmen high in the rigging were ordered to break full canvas.

The stately four-master, one of the oldest barquentines afloat, was followed by a ferry and scores of small craft as she headed for the open sea.
