  • Description

Sir Roy Welensky's ruling United Federal Party had a landslide victory in the second parliamentary elections November 12 in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in which there were African candidates for the first time.

Federal Prime Minister Welensky looked genial as he went to vote. All his Ministers were returned. He was to announce his new Cabinet at weeksend. It is likely to include one African Minister - probably Mr. Jasper Savanhu. Sir Roy was due to fly to London November 17 for talks on the plans for Constitutional changes in Northern Rhodesia.

In the new Federal Parliament it was likely that the UFP would hold 46 of the 59 seats, the right wing Opposition Dominion Party nine and the Independents four. The UFP won all the seats in Nyasaland and all seven in the Northern Rhodesian copperbelt where the DP had hoped to win votes from European miners who returned to work last week after an eight week strike. Mr. Winston Field, the DP leader, was among those elected.

The UFP gained a majority of more than two-thirds. Final results were not being announced for several days.
