  • Description

The Lebanese Falangist leader, Bashir Gemayel, has been speaking about what he would like to see from the new committee which has been formed to supervise the implementation of the Cairo agreement. A ceasefire was announced last Thursday (21 July) following a meeting between the Palestinians, and Syrian and Lebanese military commanders. The new agreement is aimed at preventing further clashes between the Palestinians and Falangists in South Lebanon. But Mr. Gemayel told reporters he was critical of the way it was formed:
The sporadic fighting in South Lebanon has continued since the end of the Civil War seven months ago, which left 40 thousand people dead and about 60,000 injured. The recent clashes have been in a small scale -- by comparison with the civil war. Lebanese left-wingers and Palestinian commandoes have fought Falangists for the control of villages in the south. Since Thursday's ceasefire there have been reports of several clashes.
