MOBIL OIL DONATED THE PIPELINE FREE OF CHARGE TO THE GHANAIAN GOVERNMENT, AND IN ITS NEW ROLE IT WILL BE ABLE TO DISCHARGE SOME 3-MILLION GALLONS OF SEWAGE DAILY. THE FLOW OF SEWAGE WILL EVENTUALLY INCREASE TO 9-MILLION GALLONS A DAY WITH THE LINKING-UP TO THE OLD PIPELINE OF AN EXTRA 8-THOUSAND FEET (20,320 METRES) OF PIPING.

THE HANDING-OVER CEREMONY TOOK PLACE AT GHANA'S MINISTRY OF WORKS AND HOUSING, WITH THE COMMISSIONER FOR WORKS AND HOUSING, MR ISSIFU ALI, SIGNING FOR THE GOVERNMENT, AND MR EDWARD G. HYMAS, GENERAL MANAGER OF MOBIL OIL (GHANA) LTD., SIGNING FOR THE COMPANY.

FOR MANY YEARS THE PIPELINE WAS A VITAL LINK IN THE SUPPLY OF THE BULK OF GHANA'S REQUIREMENTS OF PETROL, DIESEL FUEL AND KEROSENE. WHEN IT WAS OPENED, IN 1955, IT WAS THE LARGEST SUBMARINE PIPELINE IN THE WORLD AND HAD COST HALF-A-MILLION NEW CEDIS (APPRX. GBP222-THOUSAND STERLING).
