  • Description

Bomb explosions wrecked about six cars at the village of Kokkinotrimithia, near Nicosia, Cyprus, on Wednesday night(June 27). The following day,thirty-six followers of General Grivas - the leader of the EOKA movement pledged to union with Greece - were arrested in Limassol, and remanded in custody at Nicosia court, on charges of sedition and conspiracy.

The explosions were part of a renewed crop of bombings and shootings throughout the island. The cause of the trouble is the bitter conflict between the Government of Archbishop Makarios, and General Grivas 'EOKA supporters, who feel that union with Greece will not be achieved while the Archbishop is in power.

The mass arrest of the 36 EOKA members, including members of the National Guard, by policemen handpicked for their loyalty, signals the Archbishop's determination to clamp down completely on EOKA activities. He has told interviewers that General Grivas is conducting a guerrilla campaign against his administration, and has ordered intensive police searches of Limassol, where he claims General Grivas set up his headquarters after returning from Greece in 1971. A police spokesman said a 'secret hide-out' had been found.
