  • Description

The Royal Ascot Gold Cup Race - worth GBP10,950 to the winner - has a close finish with little between the winning French horse, Wallaby the Second, ridden by F. Palmer, and Alcide, the favourite.

The Cup had a special police guard over it. Security men mingled with the thousands of race fans.

The four year old Wallaby II, owned by Baron G. de Waldner, is the seventh horse to win for France since the war.

The race is the most valuable of the Ascot meeting. There were six entrants. Third at the winning post it is the French Beige.

Another Ascot Gold Cup - for 1887 - the same day went under the auctioneer's hammer in London: it sold for GBP1,400.
