  • Description

At least 39 people, nearly all school children, died in a horror head-on crash between a goods train and a special two-coach railcar taking them home from a day's outing on Friday (28 May).

Up to 40 others, many desperately injured, were rushed to five hospitals in the area after West Germany's worst post-war rail disaster.

About 70 teenagers aged between 15 and 16 and several teachers were on the train. The railcar and the goods train ploughed head-on into each other on a single-track stretch of line, despite desperate efforts by a stationmaster to warn the drivers with a red lamp.
