  • Description

In the early hours of this morning (Saturday), Pope Paul arrived at Rome's Fiumicino Airport at the end of his gruelling ten-day tour of the Far East.

As he descended the steps of his special jet airliner at 3.30 a.m. local time, the Pontiff was greeted by his Secretary of State, French Cardinal Jean Villot; the Vicar of Rome, Cardinal Angelo Dell'Acqua; and other members of the Vatican and the Italian Government.

During his tour, Pope Paul called in at Dacca to comfort survivors of the East Pakistan floods; narrowly escaped assassination by a Bolivian painter in the Philippines; visited Iran, Australia, Samoa, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Ceylon. Throughout, he stressed the Roman Catholic Church's - and his own - dedication to world peace and development. He also repeatedly warned of the dangers of both Atheism and permissive materialism.

Witnesses of his arrival said he looked tired but fit as he entered his black limousine for the final 19 miles (30 kilometres) back to the Vatican.
