    Background: LE CASTELLET, FRANCE

Intensive work has already begun for next year's Grand Prix Formula One racing. Drivers from six teams -- Alfa Romeo, Arrows, MacLaren, Brabham, Ferrari and Renault -- carried out a number of stringent tests at the Le Castellet circuit near Marseilles on December 15. They were checking modifications in technical regulations that come into force on January 1st next year. To slow the cars, the ruling body, Federation Internationale du Sport Automobile (FISA), has banned skirts or any systems that fill the gap between the body work and the ground. They have also insisted that Formula One cars must have a full flat bottom. For greater safety, fuel tanks have improved protection, part of which consists of side panels. Designers have estimated the banning of skirts, that form an air seal with the track, could slow lap times by an average of six seconds. Constructors have said that the many changes would mean they needed to conduct extensive tests in wind tunnels.
