  • Description

President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt and Yugoslav President Tito were filmed in Damascus, Syria Feb 23 reviewing a military parade - held to mark the first anniversary of the United Arab Republic.

President Tito on an eight-day visit to the UAR arrived in Damascus with President Nasser the previous day for the hour-long parade which ranged from heavy artillery units to Syrian desert camel corps.

Tito, in a grey field-marshal's uniform and Nasser, in a civilian suit, took the salute as Soviet-built MGs streaked overhead and the UAR Syrian National Guard marched past the dais.

Some of Russia's most modern tanks - the T-54s - were displayed in the parade for the first time in Syria.

Rosewater --- used for traditional Arab welcomes -- was sprinkled by Syrian girls aboard carnival-type floats from vats on the grounds.

More than a quarter-of-a-million people watched the parade including the deputy president of UAR, Mr.Akram Al Huurani.

The parade was the finale of Unity Week celebrations - Feb 16-23-when cities, towns and villages in the UAR have been in carnival mood with processions, tribal dancing and military parades.
