    9.
Gongs announce at around 30 feet Peking opera (in same place) laughter at me on stage mixed up with PLA dance troupe. THIS REALLY RUNS ON, NEARLY TO END OF TAPE

    10.
Top shot looking down on stage performance of Red Lantern

    11.
Red Lantern from ground level -- the hero is declaiming and this fine for my stage shots.

    SIDE TWO

    1.
same as 11 except it somewhat runs on. Hero is in chains, about to be executed by the Japanese. He is later joined by his Mother and then his girl friend. You can tell Mother (I hope) by deeper voice, but the girl friend definitely comes in at 15 feet -- suggest you backlay to end on clapping which coincides with my shot of curtains being closed. This could cut in with topshot, on earlier roll. SLATED AT END.

    2.
SLATED AT HEAD: about 30 feet; new stage with green backcloth -- girl singer including piano (this also runs on) -- applause during song denotes arrival of foreign visitors, but ignore -- ends on applause plus end-slate by Chinese soundman.

    3.
atmost track of holiday crowds and loudspeakers which could also be used for lake and general holiday scenes.

    4.
Sword dance etc on Roll 7 given by Red Guards and members of amateur dramatic group from a Peking factory. Note applause when Mao slogan is carried onto stage; trumpets announce appearance of Red Flag and armed detachments -- emphasis is on fighting US Imperialism -- end slated by Chinese soundman.

Background: On Saturday, Peking celebrated May Day with a spectacular fireworks display. The sky over the Chinese capital was turned into a brilliant patchwork of colours as thousands of rockets burst over Tien An Min Square.

It was the highlight of the day, which is one of the most important in the Chinese calendar. Traditionally, there has always been a vast daylight parade in the square to salute workers of the world.

This year the rally was held in the evening. Searchlights weaved across the square as thousands of people staged displays depicting Chairman Mao Tse-tung's thoughts and Chinese culture, history and progress.

Chinese leaders watched the proceedings from the Gate of Heavenly Peace.
