On Saturday, Peking celebrated May Day with a spectacular fireworks display. The sky over the Chinese capital was turned into a brilliant patchwork of colours as thousands of rockets burst over Tien An Min Square.
It was the highlight of the day, which is one of the most important in the Chinese calendar. Traditionally, there has always been a vast daylight parade in the square to salute workers of the world.
This year the rally was held in the evening. Searchlights weaved across the square as thousands of people staged displays depicting Chairman Mao Tse-tung's thoughts and Chinese culture, history and progress.
Chinese leaders watched the proceedings from the Gate of Heavenly Peace.
